Julian Carr - Skier

Where are you from?
I am from Salt Lake City, UT.

How did you get into skiing?
My mom took me skiing in 8th grade. I grew up playing soccer, football, basketball, and lots of skateboarding. I actually went snowboarding in 5th grade, sprained my knee the first run, and didn't hop back on snow until 8th grade on skis with my mom. 100% fell in love with skiing the first day.

Favorite place to ski?
Alta/Snowbird, UT on a deep day.

One thing you can't live without?
Health.

Favorite activity besides skiing?
Peak bagging. I love being on top of mountains. I started a peak bagging contest series actually, called Peak Series. Check it out www.peak-series.com.

Craziest thing you've done in the backcountry?
I wouldn't say anything is crazy, but the idea of being in the backcountry with a small group of your buddies, producing content, skiing lines, chatting safety protocol, discussing filmed perspectives, radio communication... pretty wild experience to be self-sufficient in that regard.

What is your dream job?
Skiing for a living.

Fun fact about yourself
I love to draw mazes.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?
Healthy and happy.

How did you get into skiing?
Some family friends of ours were ski enthusiasts and introduced me to the sport on cross-country skis. Our local hill allowed kids to ski for free, which my parents saw as a very cheap childcare solution. Plus, It’s all I really wanted to do.

Favorite place to ski?
Wherever there is snow.

One thing you can't live without?
Learning.

Favorite activity besides skiing?
Anything that requires a combination of focus, skill and physical output.

Craziest thing you've done in the backcountry?
That’s a very subjective question. I’d have to say down climbing rime and ice over exposure without a rope to get to the start of my line. There were people at the bottom who could have picked up my carcass but no one to assist me getting to my line. I made the decision to go ahead with the down-climb/traverse because we had been in the same area and didn’t feel like I was risking much. I had 2 ice axes and crampons on and felt really secure but should not have put myself in that situation. Halfway through, I was committed and realized… this is f’ing crazy!

What is your dream job?
Skiing for a living.

Fun fact about yourself
I lived in Yurts until I was 10 years old.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?
I’d like to be part of the solution rather than the problem. The problems we are facing as a society in today’s world are vast and diverse. I’d like to help create some positive cultural change so we can live a bit more harmoniously with each other as well as our environment. As is becoming more apparent with time, our consumerism model is not only hurting our environment but hurting our youth. With the influx and over consumption of media, the devices and “connectivity” we are seeing that our social structure is falling apart. Kids are struggling with identity at an alarming rate, are unmotivated and are turning to drugs. I’m digressing from the question. I guess I’d like to be living in a place where my family can thrive, have access to the great outdoors, ski and help to create positive change.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

How did you get into skiing?
My parents put my brothers and I on skis before we could say no.

Favorite place to ski?
Home. Jackson will always be my favorite place to mountain, but I do love to ski in Europe. I've had some of my best ski days in Austria. The ski culture is much more ingrained in everyone's lifestyle in Europe and it shows in the quality of the resorts.
